The inaugural Battle for the Underground, Sweet Sixteen, celebrated the 16th anniversary of the Essx Vaulting Poles. Hosted at Crystal City Underground, a former sand mine in Crystal City, Missouri, by the Motley Crew Vault Club on September 6, 2014, it brought in 84 vaulters from 66 postal codes encompassing 17 states and 5 countries. In honor of their acquisition of Essx, UST-Essx sponsored a $16,000 prize for any vaulter with a PR of 5.79 or below that could jump 5.81 on a hole-in-one, first try, no touch jump. Jeff Coover won the elite men's competition at 5.35m, breaking the former facility record held by Paul Litchfield (17'4) and beating Sam Kendricks on scratches. Together, they share what we believe to be the American Underground record.
